College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) is one of three colleges at the City University of Hong Kong. It offers professional educational programs in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences which emphasize on whole person development, through a well-rounded and broad-based professional education.

Structure of CLASS

Background

There are a total of six departments in CLASS. Programmes offering by the departments are designed to meet Hong Kong society's rising demand for public administrators, policy planners, urban managers, language educators and professionals in the fields of media and communication. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is home to six departments spanning a wide range of subjects which also offers research degree programmes at MPhil and PhD levels.

Staff

The College is headed by Dean (Professor Xiaowei Zang, who is also the Chair Professor of Social Sciences) and four Associate Deans conduct Undergraduate Curriculum (Dr Alice Chik), Research and Postgraduate Studies (Professor Richard M Walker), Student Life and Learning (Professor Dennis Wong), and, Internationalization (Professor Paul Cammack) respectively.

Student Union

The Executive Committee of the first College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and Division Society, City University of Hong Kong Students' Union (LASDS) was established in 2013. They organized various events, such as orientation camps and souvenir selling, for all the students in this college.

Admission

JUPAS (HKDSE) application

Entrance requirements

Applicants are required to meet the general entrance requirements for admission to Bachelor's degree programme (JS1011) at the College. The following levels/grades are the minimum acceptance.

  • Level 3 in Chinese Language and English Language; and
  • Level 2 in Mathematics and Liberal Studies; and
  • Level 3 in one elective subject (excluding Applied Learning subjects)

Direct / Non-JUPAS application

  • GCE System (GCE A-Level and GCSE)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • Post-Secondary study
  • Hong Kong Advanced-Level Examination (HKALE)
  • Non-local qualifications
  • Mature applicants

Other than the JUPAS (HKDSE) system, in Hong Kong, there is a local applicant UCAS style system and a parallel system for international students to apply. Places for international students and many scholarships are provided in a broad range of subjects in its six constituent departments by the College.

Associate Degree / Higher Diploma Graduates

Associate degree or higher diploma graduates can be admitted with Advanced Standing, depending on whether their admission is to a senior year or a non-senior year place. Credit transfer will not be considered for advanced standing students.

Admission arrangements

for 12-year school-leaving qualification

Applicants who hold a 12-year school-leaving qualification or an incomplete sub-degree qualification are generally admitted to the College, and will select a major after one year of study, which means they will have their major in year 2. At the ends of the first year, the top 20% of students* will be free to choose a major offered by the College. The remaining 80% of students will be assigned a major of their choice, based on the availability of places and students' ability to meet the criteria of the selection set by the College.

  • I. Completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B

(including the number of credit units specified by the College for its required courses)

  • II. No failed grades in any courses in Semesters A and B
  • III. Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B

for 13-year school-leaving qualification

Applicants who hold a 13-year school-leaving qualification, an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, or a General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCEAL), or a Hong Kong Advanced-Level Examination (HKALE) qualification can apply for admission to the College, or to a major programme, and may receive Advanced Standing. The minimum graduation requirement for Advanced Standing students is 90 credits (instead of the 120 credits in a standard four-year curriculum), based on the requirements of individual majors.
